Someone’s probably gonna kill me for saying this…
The best way to improve website visibility on Google has nothing to do with SEO, getting backlinks from high PR websites, or jam-packing the keyword densities of your web pages — and I say this even though I offer (or used to offer) these services.
Nor does it have anything to do with Panda, Penguin or Grasshopper (the latest Google Search algorithms everyone’s talking about). While important — these are all secondary.
How To *Really* Improve Your Website’s Visibility
The secret to improve website visibility on Google can be found in a nugget I received yesterday in an email from Ramit Sethi, the Founder and author of the New York Times best-selling book “I Will Teach You To Be Rich“.
In his email, Ramit relates how, while still a lowly student at Stanford, he emailed Guy Kawasaki, the famous Silicon Valley Silicon Valley author, speaker, and business advisor. Kawasaki was one of the Apple employees originally responsible for marketing the Macintosh in 1984. In his email, Ramit asked him how to get more speaking engagements. Guy Kawasaki responded to Ramit’s email and said (paraphrased):
“You want to know how to get more speaking gigs? Do something meaningful. Once you do, you’ll have more speaking invitations than you know what to do with. But right now, you haven’t done anything notable.”
Ouch! The truth will set you free…
Ramit asked an innocent question, and got the brutal truth. Ouch, that must have hurt! But instead of taking it personally, Ramit set out to work, and is now a sought-after personal finance advisor and speaker.
He’s built a highly successful business with an information product to help budding entrepreneurs take the first step towards being masters of their destiny called: “Earn your first $1k on the side“. Ramit’s advice on money has been featured on CNN, Wall Street Journal, ABC News, FOX Business, PBS, The New York Times, CNBC, Yahoo! Finance, NPR, Reuters, REUTERS, and Fortune Magazine. His personal finance book, I Will Teach You To Be Rich, is a New York Times bestseller, and a Wall Street Journal bestseller.
Do you think Ramit’s worried about the latest Panda algorithm? Heck no! The lesson we can all learn from this is:
Set about with the intention to do something extraordinary!
The best way to increase website visibility is to do something, create something meaningful. It doesn’t have to be huge, on the contrary it’s better to focus on one of your passions. Start small, target a niche, when you’ve got three customers you’re in business. Take some time to think about what you can offer your prospects, and create something everyone will talk about. Become the master of your niche, and build from there. But it’s important to take the first step.
What’s the old saying? “The first million’s the hardest.”
Google started with the proverbial “two guys in a garage.”
Like Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the first step is to set your intention to do something extraordinary — go make a difference!
The visibility, backlinks, and high pagerank follow.
